The ability to communicate with your team, or hurl taunts at the opposition, is both seen as crucial and fun aspects to a lot of multiplayer FPS games. With that in mind, we are also going to implement a voice quick chat system. Now as we don't have access to a multitude of actors, we thought we'd offer you guys the chance to have your voices in Rise. So we present a competition for you :) The first phase of this competition will be to submit your recordings of the words and phrases detailed at the bottom of this post. We will then pick the best or more appropriate 5-8 people (or the ones who offer the largest bribe of course) who will then have the fortunate role of providing all the words and phrases that will get used in Rise. We'd very much like to get a broad spectrum of accents in, but please note that they are all to be spoken in English. You should be able to record these using nothing more than a simple head set microphone, and we have some basic tips to get some decent quality: Ensure the recording volume is set correctly. Too low results in very quiet samples that are then difficult to increase volume without introducing unwanted artifacts. Too high results in the audio 'clipping', creating loud pops that are virtually impossible to remove. If you can see a volume meter when testing the microphone, try to set the level at the top of the 'green' level, or some may display 0dB. This will be ideal. Best results are obtained by not having the mic directly in front of your mouth. Place it to one side, or either slightly above or below. This avoids the 'blow' effect of pronouncing certain letters such as P or D. If you want to get really fancy - hold a sheet of paper steady between your mouth and the microphone for even better quality gains (ensuring you don't rustle the paper of course). You can simply use Windows sound recorder, or another free sound program, such as Audacity (Link). The best way of recording these, so as to avoid changing the settings and the way you have the mic setup, is to record them all in one go, leaving a long enough pause between each one, (it will look something like this:)

And probably sound something like this: LISTEN Then cut/paste each one into it's own file before saving, This should resemble something like this:

In game these will sound something like: Hello: LISTEN See ya: LISTEN How's it going: LISTEN I'm good: LISTEN We will accept submissions in Wav format, recorded in 16 bit at 44.1 kHz. Each file should be named in the following convention for example: your[at]email.com-hi.wav your[at]email.com-bye.wav All the samples should be zipped up and named as such: your name-your[at]email.com-risevoicecomp.zip Then send to: voicecompo[at]project-rise.org Please ensure you are accurate with this otherwise our filter will not pick it up and your entry won't even get through to us. Here's what we'd like you to use for the 1st submissions: "Hi" Or "Hello" Or "Howdy" "Bye" Or "See ya" Or "Laters" "How are you?" Or "How's it going?" Or "How you doin'?" "I'm good" Or "I'm well" Or "I'm terrific!" "I've felt better" "Good shot!" Or "Nice shooting!" Or "Bot!" "How'd that feel" Or "Oooo that had to hurt" Or "Ouch hahaha" "Wow" The deadline for this 1st stage will be July 26th 2008, so you have plenty of time :) We shall announce the winners by the 2nd of August. Good luck all, and many thanks for helping out.
